Car or Public Transport - Two Worlds
نویسنده
چکیده
There are two kinds of people: those who travel by car, and those who use public transport. The topic of this article is to show that the algorithmic problem of computing the fastest way to get from A to B is also surprisingly different on road networks than on public transportation networks. On road networks, even very large ones like that of the whole of Western Europe, the shortest path from a given source to a given target can be computed in just a few microseconds. Lots of interesting speed-up techniques have been developed to this end, and we will give an overview over the most important ones. Public transportation networks can be modeled as graphs just like road networks, and most algorithms designed for road networks can be applied for public transportation networks as well. They just happen to perform not nearly as well, and to date we do not know how to route similarly fast on large public transportation networks as we can on large

Developing an urban congestion pricing model by considering sustainability improvement and using a multi-objective optimization approach
This paper introduces a Travel Demand Management (TDM) model in order to decrease the transportation externalities by affecting on passengers’travel choices. Thus, a bi-objective bi-modal optimization model for road pricing is developed aiming to enhance environmental and social sustainability by considering to minimize the air pollution and maximize the social welfare as its objectives. This m...

This paper explores the development of rail systems in Ireland and Australia. The paper highlights the different trajectories of both systems and charts the experiences and influences of Empire and Commonwealth on both. In Australia the rail system was developed as a way to promote nation building and overcome isolation while in Ireland both prior to and after partition the system enabled acces...

متن کاملCan Public Transport Compete with the Private Car?
Public transport is often perceived to be a poor alternative for car use. This paper describes who may be open to use public transport more often, and how people might be persuaded to use it. A computerised questionnaire study was conducted among 1,803 Dutch respondents in May 2001. Results revealed that especially fervent car users disliked public transport. For them, the car outperformed publ...

How much to drive, and how much to use public transport, are modelled as threeand two level decisions, respectively, based on micro-data for Sweden. The choices whether to have a car, whether to drive given access to a car, and how much to drive given that the individual drives at all are then estimated using a three equation model. Also after correcting for other variables, such as income, men...
